Scrap the two child benefit cap

Scrap the two child benefit cap

Last week the King's Speech failed to mention the two child benefit cap - the 'single biggest policy driver of child poverty'. It is imperitive that the new Labour government acts now to scrap the cap, which would immediately lift nearly half a million children out of poverty. The two-child benefit cap, introduced by Tory Chanecellor George Osborne in 2015 is a cruel policy which keeps the most vulnerable in our society. Children living in poverty currently aren't getting enough food, missing out on opportunies and their families are enduring great hardship.

As our founder, Jeremy Corbyn, said when speaking in Parliament, 'we don't need a taskforce to know that the two child benefits cap is profoundly immoral. Why not just scrap it now?'

This week Parliament will be meeting to discuss and vote on amendments to the King's Speech. If enough MPs vote to scrap the two-child benefit cap, then we can change this policy and help the most vultnerable children in this country. A number of charities including Save the Children and the Child Poverty Action Group have backed the idea of scrapping the cap - even the Archbishop of Canterbury and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown have agreed that the Labour government should end this cruel policy.

Write to your MP now using our tool and ask them to do the right thing and scrap the cap!
