El Bajío managed to expel Minera Penmont (part of Fresnillo PLC and in turn a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles) from its lands and won 67 lawsuits for which the mining company must, among other things, return all the gold it extracted from its lands and remedy environmental damage.

Violence against ejidatarios has intensified since these legal victories. The ejidatarios have been beaten, imprisoned, assassinated and disappeared.
