US presidential election: no justice, no peace

US election cover
Last night's US presidential election debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump laid bare the challenges we face in securing peace around the world, including in Gaza and Ukraine.

The debate between the two main candidates for President of the United States allowed little space between the tiresome personal attacks on one another to discuss the substantive issues such as the climate crisis, workers' rights and bringing about peace through diplomatic means in the world's numerous conflicts.

Voters in the US are no better informed on the serious issues that one of these candidates will face when they take office in January next year following polling day on Tuesday 5 November 2024.

From the offset, we utterly reject the deranged hysteria and division of Donald Trump's far-right political agenda.

We note that, through the political theatrics, both candidates made alarming statements concerning Israel's destruction in Gaza and the genocide of the Palestinian people. Vice President Harris said "Israel has a right to defend itself. How it does so matters because it is also true far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed. I will always give Israel the ability to defend itself."

Earlier this year, President Biden signed off on the US government sending $17bn in military aid to Israel.

With seeming recognition of the vast death toll in Gaza, where over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, we simply ask Harris: how many innocent lives must be lost before you end the Biden administration's endless funding of the atrocities unfolding before us and apply sanctions on the Israeli government who continue to commit an ethnic cleansing in plain sight?

On this matter, and on many others, the American people deserve so much better than picking what colour of complicity in genocide they prefer.

We call on Kamala Harris to; end the US government's carte blanche support and political cover for the Netanyahu government, suspend all arms to Israel and recognise the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people. We also demand an end to the US' long history of funding the global arms trade and wars around the world. All candidates must realise and recognise that all wars must be brought to end through diplomatic means and not the endless spilling of blood.
