Statement on Gaza ceasefire

We welcome news of a ceasefire deal agreed by Hamas and Israel.

After 15 months of Israeli brutality following the events of 7 October 2023, this moment must be the beginning of a process which ends the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, recognises the State of Palestine and brings those response for the genocide in Gaza to justice. World leaders must work tirelessly to make this a reality if they are truly to achieve a lasting peace.

Our founder Jeremy Corbyn, along with other Independent Alliance MPs, released a statement following the ceasefire announcement.

We are hopeful that this new cessation of hostilities will bring relief to survivors, as well as those who will be reunited with loved ones as part of the agreement. The past 15 months have demonstrated the utter failure of governments around the world to at in accordance with international law, many of whom have provided billions in arms sales to Israel and provided unwavering political cover for the slaughter of over 46,000 Palestinian civilians.

We note that, even with the announcement of a ceasefire which is still yet to be ratified by Netanyahu's cabinet, Israel has continued striking civilian targets and vital infrastructure in Gaza.

With the news of this ceasefire, the role of our movement - the movement for peace - must be to continue to demand justice for the Palestinian people slaughtered in Gaza by standing resolutely with the victims of crimes against humanity committed by Israeli forces and those who backed and funded these unimaginable atrocities, including the US and UK governments.

Our movement must also continue in its pursuit of the truth of how many lives could have been saved if world governments had acted sooner to the global demand for peace. We reiterate our previous statement that those who have funded, equivocated and actively supported Israel's campaign of destruction in Gaza have blood on their hands that will simply never wash away.

Peace & Justice Project will continue to demand accountability for those responsible for genocide and crimes against humanity in Gaza. We call on the British government to cooperate fully with the International Criminal Courts as they pursue justice against all those who have committed war crimes. This includes taking responsibility for its own complicity in genocide, complying with arrest warrants and handing over intelligence in order to support the ICC's investigations.

We will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people until they can live in peace, dignity and freedom.

Free Palestine.
