It was an exciting day with discussions on a winning a payrise, the housing crisis, the climate emergency & public ownership as well as our collective response to the conflicts that are raging around the globe.
We were joined by speakers from across our movement, exploring the policies that we need to reverse the misery that millions are suffering caused by years of austerity, neoliberalism and a system designed to benefit the few. We heard from Andrew Fisher, former policy advisor and broadcaster on how this government can tax wealth and pay for our crumbling health services. Fran Heathcote, General-Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union outlined how her members are fighting - and winning - a fair wage and disability rights activist David Rollins told the audience about how he supports some of the most vulnerable in our society against the DWP, following his harrowing experience there.
We heard an emotional plea from journalist and activist Ameena Alrasheed, calling on the conference to speak out and support the people of Sudan as well as from Leanne Mohammed and John Rees about the need to continue campaigning for Palestine and why the UK must end arms sales to Israel.
Our founder, Jeremy Corbyn, who chaired the housing panel alongside Inside Housing editor Peter Apps and organisers from both ACORN and London Renters Union, closed the conference by outlining how these 5 Demands are an alternative to the failed status quo which is being offered by both Sunak and Starmer in the upcoming general election.
"These demands are the living demands of our movement. Take them, debate them, refine them, organise with them and win them"
