Peace & Justice Project: Autumn Statement response

Autumn Statement response (1)
Following the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Autumn Statement to the House of Commons, the Peace & Justice Project has issued the following response.

Today's Autumn Statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, has simply failed to address the devastating magnitude of the problems our country and planet face.

Instead of taking on the challenges faced by millions of people, such as extortionate energy bills and the financial suffocation in our schools and hospitals, which has left many facilities literally crumbling, the Chancellor turned his fire on some of the most vulnerable people in our society, including disabled people and those claiming benefits, introducing a new tranche of punitive measures for those who are unable to find suitable employment. We also note the disgraceful decision from the government to continue with their appalling two-child benefit cap, as well as the lack of opposition from the Labour Party to this policy.

Over the past 13 years, this Conservative government has overseen the largest reduction in real living standards since Office of National Statistics records began. Earlier this month, the UN said UK had "violated international law" with obscene poverty levels - and it is estimated that nearly 4 million people were experiencing unprecedented levels of destitution.

This is a stark contrast to the continuation of handouts and perks for the wealthiest corporations and individuals.

“Over the past 13 years, this Conservative government has overseen the largest reduction in real living standards since Office of National Statistics records began.”

The Tories' Autumn Statement shows just how far removed from reality those within the political establishment truly are. The circumstances we face as a society, country and planet mean that tinkering around the edges cannot and will not cut it when it comes to building an alternative to the misery faced by millions.

Earlier this year, the Peace & Justice Project set out 5 Demands to bring about a world of peace and social justice for the many. These demands include fair pay for all workers, much-needed investment for our NHS, housing for the many and a Green New Deal to bring energy companies into public ownership to bring down the rip-off bills and secure the sustainable future of our planet.

These absolutely essential needs were ignored by the Chancellor today.

We will continue to campaign for peace and social justice for the many, not just the few.
