Today’s budget was a missed opportunity to bring about the transformative change this country needs.
4.2 million children are growing up in poverty. A quarter of a million people are homeless. Meanwhile, we are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster.
These crises demand bold solutions. The government could have implemented wealth taxes to bring about a more equal and sustainable society. Instead, it has chosen to bake in decades of inequality by feigning regret over “tough choices” it does not have to make. That includes keeping the 2-child benefits cap, cutting winter fuel allowance and increasing the bus fare cap by 50%.
At the same time, the government has committed an additional £3bn on military spending.
Real security is when everybody has a decent home; we will only solve the housing crisis with rent controls and a huge council-house-building programme.
Real security is ensuring a habitable future; we should be investing in a Green New Deal that brings water and energy into public ownership, and ends state subsidies to fossil fuel giants.
Real security is co-operating with our global neighbours to bring about a world of peace.
We welcome increases in the National Minimum Wage and Carers’ Allowance, but it is beyond disappointing that these changes have been accompanied by cuts to social security and disability benefits, trapping thousands of people in poverty.
We also welcome long overdue investment in hospitals. However, the government must guarantee that these resources go into our NHS, not into the pockets of private healthcare shareholders.
We will not tackle the crises facing us all without a fundamental redistribution of wealth and power – and the modest increases in capital gains tax are a far cry from the £16bn that could have been raised by full equalisation with income tax. We reiterate our demands for wealth taxes to fund a fairer, greener future.
We were elected by our constituents to provide hope in a Parliament of despair – and we will continue to campaign for a more equal, sustainable and peaceful society for all.
