Jeremy Corbyn joins the Samworth Brothers rally in Leicester

Jeremy Corbyn spoke at the rally in support of workers at one of the area's largest employers. The demonstration on Sunday (June 19), is part of an ongoing campaign to win union recognition at food manufacturer, Samworth Brothers.

The Unionise Samworth Brothers campaign is a joint initiative between the Bakers, Food & Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) and they have launched a petition, which can be signed here, to build support. It calls on Samworth Brothers to pay employees 'a fair living wage', full sick pay and recognition of the BFAWU as its trade union.

Jeremy addressed the audience as he said: "We need unions. We need unions to represent us. We need unions speak up and speak out.

"[When buying food] I want to know that the people that produced that food were treated properly, did have the right to join the trade union, and weren't forced to work in dangerous conditions.

Artin Giles, lead campaigner at the Peace and Justice Project said: “As the cost of living crisis hits people’s pockets deeper, workers are also hitting back telling their bosses that enough is enough. The Peace and Justice Project is proud to be co-organising this campaign with the bakers' union and we’ll be organising throughout the summer, autumn, winter and into next year until we win union recognition at Samworth Brothers."

The Unionise Samworth Brothers campaign petition can be signed here.
