We must ensure that humanity never again reaches the level of catastrophic depravity witnessed on that day.

We recognise Hiroshima Day as an opportunity to re-commit to bringing about a world of peace and social justice. Whilst this is a historic commemoration, it remains a contemporary cause to oppose crimes against humanity, such as the genocide in Gaza.

Our founder, Jeremy Corbyn, has published his reflections on the significance of this day in The Morning Star. In this latest article, he said:

"Hiroshima is a reminder that nuclear weapons have one purpose, and one purpose only: to cause death and destruction on a colossal scale. I will never understand the pride and excitement with which so many politicians proclaim they would be prepared to launch a nuclear attack. In what circumstances is it necessary to annihilate humanity? Do they know what a global nuclear war would actually look like?

It is in this important context that we reaffirm our opposition to the persistent calls for funding for these horrific weapons of war - and will continue to do so until we live in a world free from nuclear weapons.
